Wall vents are easy to overlook, but they have an important job. They let air move through the wall cavity, and when they're blocked, that airflow stops. At a unit in Eastlakes, NSW, High Demand Restoration attended to remove silicone and adhesive from the property's external vents, so the wall cavity could ventilate properly again.

Three external vents on the brick walls of the unit had been sealed from behind with silicone and/or adhesive. From a distance the vents looked normal, but up close the material filled the gaps behind the louvres and blocked air from passing through.

The silicone and adhesive were removed from behind the louvres of all three vents. With the material gone, the openings between the louvres are clear again, so air can move in and out of the wall cavity. Before and after photos were taken of each vent.

Brick walls are built with vents so the cavity behind them can breathe. Airflow helps moisture inside the cavity dry out instead of sitting there. When vents are covered or sealed, moisture has fewer ways to escape, which can make conditions inside more favourable for damp and mould. Vents are sometimes sealed to keep out draughts, noise or pests, without realising they also stop the cavity from ventilating.
