Graffiti on a building isn't just an eyesore. In a shared walkway that residents use every day, it makes the whole property feel neglected, and graffiti that's left in place often attracts more.
At an apartment building in Matraville, NSW, High Demand Restoration was called in to remove graffiti from the walkway running from the back of the property to the front. Most of it came off cleanly, but one surface showed why graffiti removal isn't always as simple as scrubbing harder.

The graffiti stretched along both walls of the walkway, with more on the entry wall and the walkway door. It was a mix of spray paint and marker tags in several colours, which matters because different products sit on a surface in different ways.

Our team carried out cleaning works along the walkway, and the affected areas were cleaned to remove the visible graffiti. The entry wall, which had a bright blue tag across it, came up clean.
Along the full length of the walkway, the walls were left clear of the visible graffiti.

The walkway door was a different story. After cleaning, some graffiti still remained on the door. Scrubbing it any further would have started removing the door's paint, so the cleaning stopped there.

This is one of the most common surprises with graffiti removal. When graffiti sits on a painted surface, the tag and the paint underneath can bond together. Clean too gently and the tag stays. Clean too hard and you strip the paint, leaving a patch that stands out even more than the graffiti did.
Not every surface reacts the same way to graffiti cleaning:
When graffiti can't be removed without damaging the finish, repainting the area is often the cleanest way to restore the surface.
