Water entering around a chimney can lead to ongoing problems inside the home. Fireplace areas can also collect dust, debris and contamination over time, especially when moisture is getting in.
At a townhouse in Haberfield, NSW, High Demand Restoration completed chimney repairs to stop water penetration, then cleaned the accessible lower section of the chimney. This included removing visible mould, dust and debris from the fireplace area.

Water was getting in through cracks in the mortar around the chimney. Mortar joints hold masonry together and keep the weather out. Once they crack, rain can find its way through and into the structure below.

Following inspection, the chimney was sealed off completely and the surrounding area was repointed. Repointing means replacing damaged mortar in the joints, which closes the gaps that were letting water through.

Cleaning works were then completed on the accessible lower section of the chimney. Visible mould, dust, debris and loose contamination were removed from the accessible internal chimney surfaces.
All removed waste was collected, bagged and disposed of. The accessible chimney area was then cleaned and inspected, and was left free from visible loose contamination.
The before photos show how much debris had built up inside the fireplace. After the cleaning works, the area was visibly cleaner.

To finish the job, a small removable barrier was installed to stop pets from getting into the chimney cavity. Because it is removable, the cavity can still be accessed when needed.

Chimneys are exposed to the weather all year round, and leaks often start small. Water coming through cracked mortar may not show up straight away. Over time, it can lead to damp patches, staining or a musty smell around the fireplace. Moisture and built up debris can also create conditions where mould can grow.
